Southwest Church Recognizes Historic Potomac River Slave Escape 14 Years Before D.C. Emancipation

77 enslaved people attempted to escape bondage on April 15, 1848 on a schooner called “The Pearl” organized by free Black people and white abolitionists, which prompted the Washington Riot and the D.C. Emancipation Act.
