The D.C. Department of Public Works, in concert with the Department of Energy and the Environment, will host a Zero Waste DC Community Fair later this month.
The free event, scheduled for March 30 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in Eastern Market’s North Hall in Southeast, will connect D.C. residents to resources offered by the city government and local zero-waste businesses and organizations, as well as give them the tools to embrace best zero-waste practices.
The fair also celebrated the new Zero Waste DC Plan, which was released in February and outlines the District’s strategy to achieve a more sustainable future, maximize the benefits of renewable and reusable resources, and minimize the amount of waste and greenhouse gas emissions generated by residents and government agencies by diverting agencies 80% of solid waste away from landfills and incinerations.
Activities at the fair included a cooking scrappy demonstration by Chef Bertrand Brown-Orleans; Bicycle Repair Clinic by The Bike House, which will offer bike maintenance resources and education; a children’s clothing swap sponsored by Climate Classes DC; and small battery and cellphone recycling.
DOEE will provide information on Fix-It-DC and Reuse DC, the District’s online hub for learning where to repair, donate, and shop secondhand. DPW’s Food Waste Drop-Off will be coinciding at Eastern Market in front of the Rumsey Aquatic Center.
Residents can bring their food scraps to a dropoff area for composting from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
